We use sayings to communicate quickly and on a common ground. They are like social shorthand. When we don't want to think too much about what we're trying to say or we're not confident in our ability to communicate, we conveniently resort to sayings. After reviewing the following sayings you may think twice before using them or allowing them to get into your psyche in any way.

If someone throws a "can't have your cake and eat it too" at you, you may feel downright offended. That would be great because the point of all this is to alert you to the hidden traps that keep you wondering why you can't maintain a good attitude or consistently get ahead in life.

Review the following sayings and try to decide whether or not you believe they are in your best interest. Know up front that some of them should be avoided like the plague - they can be that destructive to your state of mind.

All good things come to those who wait.
We will just have to make do.
Things happen when you least expect it.
The early bird catches the worm.
There is no substitute for experience.
Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
The harder it was to get the more you appreciate it.
     As luck would have it.
Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
It's not all supposed to be fun and games.
     No Pain - No Gain.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

#1   All good things come to those who wait.

Consider LL Cool J, a star at age 16 and in the movies by 21. He didn't want to patiently wait and his career has just gotten better and better. There are so many examples of people not waiting and still having everything they want, when they want it.

Unfortunately, there are even more examples of people waiting, and not getting anything but disappointment. Waiting becomes a way of life, not a good way, but a way to exist. Which way do you want to go?

#2   We will just have to make do.

I don't know what joker came up with this one, but it's designed to keep us down and somehow feel proud of it. By not getting what you want you become a martyr, which in some way makes you a better person? Is that really how you want to see yourself?

While it's great to do the best you can, you have to be very careful that 'making do' doesn't become a way of life. These sayings have an insidious way of defining us and this one is great at keeping people happily downtrodden.

Actively seeking solutions is admirable and productive. That's the way you get ahead. There is no honor in staying small and 'just making do'. Do you want to 'make do' or succeed?
